As one reviewer put it,
"The Local NYC's approach is unlike anything I've ever heard. Champeaux's voice is clearly unique, low and gravelly, but immediately accessible, and Cowherd's musical skills are well documented, from Joni Mitchell to Daniel Lanois and beyond..he's a monster.
If I had to put their sound in a box, imagine Tom Waits and Peter Gabriel went out for drinks with Donald Fagen and Robbie Robertson, and recorded an album at Peter McManus Pub on 19th and 7th.....and Dr. John picked up the tab..."

When not performing with The Local, Jon keeps busy playing with everyone from Brian Blade to Cassandra Wilson. Check out all Jon's projects at JonCowherd.com

THE STORY.....

More about Champeaux and Cowherd:

Tim Champeaux and Jon Cowherd met at Miss Mae's Place in New Orleans during the latter part of the last century while attending Loyola University. They bonded instantly, both having a healthy respect for Stevie Wonder, Tom Waits and Tequila.

Champeaux moved to NYC, and hit the road with NYC institution, The Second Step, playing sold out headliner shows from Asheville NC to Osaka Japan, as well as opening for The Meters, Toots and the Maytalls and Dr.John among others, spending more than 200 nights a year on the road, in a van!

Cowherd formed The Brian Blade Fellowship with drummer and classmate Brian Blade, recorded an album with legendary producer Daniel Lanois, and toured all over the the world, before settling in Brooklyn.

When Cowherd finally landed in NYC from New Orleans for good, the duo began writing songs together; Champeaux writing the lyrics, Cowherd writing the music. It soon became evident that it was time to record.  The CD "Just Show Up" was recorded at Unique Studios in Times Square NYC, and includes the single "Addict Me" which is featured on HBO's ORIGINAL SERIES IMAGE CAMPAIGN!!!

The single "ADDICT ME" reached #2 on the AMAZON ROOTS/ROCK CHART!!

A sold-out CD release party at lower east side landmark club The Living Room, a song in a movie at The Tribeca Film Festival, and The Local had found their audience.
MUSIC REVOLUTION MAGAZINE raves: "I was watching TV when a song came on that stopped me dead in my tracks. It’s slow tempo, somber baritone vocals and studied chord changes sounded like nothing I’d ever heard come out of my speakers:
The song is “Addict Me” by The Local NYC – a song-writing duo of vocalist/lyricist Tim Champeaux and multi-instrumentalist Jon Cowherd."

High praise indeed, but for The Local, it's all about great songs. So let the inevitable comparisons commence and the influences be heard. The Local is proud of every one of them. And whether those influences be musical, geographical, or occasionally chemical, they are all welcomed here. Always have been, always will be. After all, this is New York. So thanks for listening, and thanks for just showing up...
